Nina, portrayed by Toni Braxton, is the lead singer of a small gospel choir in Brent, Alabama - population 2500. They are an unlikely finalist in a competition to determine the best gospel choir in Alabama.

Jacob, played by David Julian Hirsh, is an Orthodox Jewish Cantor and amateur song writer in Brooklyn, who witnesses the senseless and brutal murder of his wife and three children.

Catatonic, Jacob walks out of the Shiva for his family, leaving behind all his worldly belongings and the tools of his faith; his yarmulka and tsitsis.  He wanders aimlessly, hoping somehow to understand his tragedy.  Without purpose, Jacob boards a southbound bus…to nowhere.

Fortuitously Jacob lands in Brent, Alabama, where he is embraced by Nina, her Uncle Moe, portrayed by Mykelti Williamson, and their church community.

Gospel music brings Nina and Jacob together as they try to make sense of his past and their possible future.
